Dr. Marte Selected for Prestigious National Leadership Program in Academic Ophthalmology
Anthony Marte, MD, Attending Physician of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, has been selected to join the INvesting, TRaining, Equipping and Promoting Individuals for Distinction (INTREPID) Leadership Development Class of 2025–2026. Jointly launched by the National Medical Association Ophthalmology Section (NMA-OS) and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO), INTREPID is a prestigious, year-long seminar-based program designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders in academic medicine and ophthalmology. The Program provides faculty members with a tailored professional development opportunity to learn foundational skills that will enable them to achieve their career goals, advance and thrive as successful leaders in academic medicine and science.
Each year, six faculty members nationwide are chosen through a competitive nomination process, underscoring the Program’s focus on identifying individuals with exceptional promise as future division chiefs, department leaders and national voices in ophthalmology. Dr. Marte’s selection places him among a small cohort of emerging leaders from top academic institutions across the country. Participants engage in a structured curriculum that blends in-person seminars at national meetings with virtual sessions throughout the year, focusing on leadership development, career advancement, mentorship networks and resilience in academic medicine.
This national recognition builds on Dr. Marte’s continued academic growth at Montefiore Einstein. During residency, he was named Resident of the Year and elected Chief Resident in the Montefiore Einstein Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Residency Program. He went on to complete a highly competitive glaucoma fellowship at Massachusetts Eye and Ear/Harvard Medical School and was named a Heed Fellow by the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation, one of the most prestigious honors for outstanding ophthalmologists pursuing academic careers in ophthalmic patient care, education and research.
As part of the INTREPID Program, Dr. Marte will participate in leadership sessions at the NMA Annual Meeting, American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting and the AUPO Annual Meeting, alongside personalized coaching and longitudinal mentorship. The Program’s emphasis on leadership skills, professional development and academic advancement aligns closely with Montefiore Einstein’s mission to heal, teach, discover and advance the health of the communities we serve.
“Dr. Marte’s selection for the INTREPID Program reflects his exceptional promise as an academic physician and leader,” said Roy S. Chuck, MD, PhD, Chairman of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Einstein and Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “We are proud to support his continued growth as a future leader in academic ophthalmology.”
