Engineering Growth

With a solutions-oriented mindset, Dr. Michael Lipsky balances expansion with high expectation

A New Jersey native, Dr. Lipsky grew up surrounded by medicine— both of his parents are physicians. “I always knew I wanted to go down the medical pathway,” he says, “but I also loved problem-solving, so I first pursued chemical engineering at Columbia.” That engineering mindset eventually led him back to the Bronx for medical school at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where a summer research project with a urologist “lit the spark for urology,” later reinforced by a Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship.

After earning his MD in 2013 and completing his residency at Columbia in 2019, Dr. Lipsky spent several years in private practice in New Jersey. He returned to Montefiore Einstein in November 2023, motivated by the chance to teach and mentor. “Being able to contribute to resident and medical student education was a big draw,” he says.

As Director of General Urology, Dr. Lipsky values the breadth of his work. “As a general urologist, I do a little bit of everything,” he explains. He also helps steer the department’s operations, running grand rounds, overseeing the faculty call schedule, and serving on the compensation committee.

One of his most visible contributions is guiding the department’s geographic growth. Montefiore Urology faculty already see patients and operate at multiple sites across the Bronx—including Waters Place, Wakefield, Moses, and Weiler—and in neighboring communities such as Yonkers, Mount Vernon, White Plains, New Rochelle, and Dobbs Ferry. Dr. Lipsky has been involved in evaluating additional outpatient offices and ambulatory surgery locations.

“The goal is to continue providing excellent care to our Bronx community while extending our reach to neighboring areas,” he notes.

Reflecting on this expansion, he adds, “It’s exciting to help shape where we go next. We want to make sure that as we grow, we keep the same standard of care and the same strong connection to the Bronx that defines Montefiore.”

For Dr. Lipsky, the appeal of Montefiore is clear: the chance to care for patients while helping chart the department’s next chapter. Less than two years into his tenure, the future is already taking shape.
