Montefiore Einstein’s Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Selected as Official Team Physicians for the Jamaican Bobsleigh Team and Healthcare Partner to New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority
At the forefront of sports medicine and rehabilitation, Montefiore Einstein has been selected as the official team physicians and healthcare partner for the Jamaican Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (JBSF), the national team that captured global attention with its historic Olympic debut and inspired the film Cool Runnings. This partnership builds on years of collaboration in Kingston, Jamaica, following an invitation from the Jamaican Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport to serve as the team’s official medical provider.
Montefiore Einstein’s sports medicine team provides comprehensive medical and performance support as athletes prepare for the North America Cup during the 2025–2026 season. The team recently demonstrated its competitive strength in Whistler, earning gold in the men’s four-man event and bronze in the men’s two-man event, along with strong top-10 finishes by the women. Building on this momentum, the team will compete next in Park City and Lake Placid as they pursue a podium finish at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
Through its relationship with the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), Montefiore Einstein Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians provide medical care at World Cup and championship levels across multiple sports, including figure skating, ice hockey, ski jumping, biathlon, cross-country skiing, bobsleigh, skeleton, and luge.
“Partnering with ORDA connects our department directly to the epicenter of U.S. Olympic sports,” said Matthew N. Bartels, MD, MPH, professor and chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “It allows us to deliver elite-level medical care to athletes performing at the highest level while advancing our expertise in rehabilitation and performance medicine.”
Advancing Rehabilitation Medicine on a Global Stage
Beyond the international spotlight, Montefiore Einstein remains deeply committed to community health and global outreach. Later this year, a team of sports medicine and rehabilitation specialists will return to the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre in Kingston, Jamaica, to provide direct patient care, donate essential rehabilitation equipment including wheelchairs and ambulatory aids, and lead educational sessions for local clinicians.
“From the fields of the Bronx to the tracks of Lake Placid and the clinics of Kingston, our mission remains the same: to help athletes and patients recover, restore, and reach their full potential,” Dr. Bartels said.
As the official hospital for the New York Yankees and New York City Football Club, official team physicians for the New York Boulders and the Jamaican bobsleigh team, and official hospital and healthcare partner for the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority, Montefiore Einstein has earned the highest standard for rehabilitation medicine, a three-year designation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). Montefiore Einstein’s Burke Rehabilitation Hospital is also ranked in the top 1 percent of U.S. hospitals for rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report.
