In October 2024, Montefiore Einstein Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery partnered with Operation International, a humanitarian organization that offers free medical care to children and adults experiencing a lack of healthcare around the globe. The team hosted an important medical mission in Mpanda, Tanzania, bringing high-quality essential care to individuals from underserved communities who otherwise would not have had access to life-changing treatments.
\r\n\r\nLed by Mona Gangar, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Pediatrics, Co-Director of the Pediatric Thyroid Program and Director of Medical Students, alongside Brazil-based craniofacial surgeon Fernando Almas, MD, Team Manhattan comprised residents Tom Yusin, MD, Sharan Shah, MD, and Kareem Al-Mulki, MD, medical student Justina Shafik (MS IV), scrub technician Pauline Dennis, Andrea Nimmons, certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) at Hutchinson Campus, and Montefiore Einstein Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery alumni Andrew Tassler, MD, and Matt Ashbach, MD. This 2024 mission was the third surgical mission of Team Manhattan, a group of volunteers with a passion for global health equity whose expertise is largely focused on head and neck surgery and facial reconstructive procedures. The team was founded in 2022 by Dr. Gangar and alumnus Dr. Madnani.
\r\n\r\nFrom October 5–12, Team Manhattan performed 70 successful complex head and neck and craniofacial reconstructive surgeries for local patients from Tanzania with life-threatening conditions and social stigma, including cleft palate repairs, thyroidectomies and excisions of large disfiguring facial tumors. These procedures transformed the lives of these individuals who otherwise lacked access to such care, improving their health, well-being, and quality of life. The team also educated local healthcare providers on sustainable healthcare techniques in the region.
\r\n\r\nThe mission not only demonstrated the expertise and compassion of our team but also underscored our leadership in addressing global health disparities. By bringing advanced medical care to Tanzania, our team exemplified the profound difference that collaboration and community can make in underserved regions. This impactful global health initiative was made possible by the dedication of the team, Operation International, and the generous support of donors who share Montefiore Einstein’s steadfast commitment to advancing health equity, increasing access to care and improving the health of our communities and beyond.
