HIGHLIGHTS
Proud Host of Multiple Traveling Fellowships
American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH)
For the second year in a row, Montefiore Einstein was honored to be selected as a host site for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) International Traveling Fellowship Program. The ASSH works with hand societies around the world to select a group of 20 international hand surgeons, who are given a rare opportunity to visit leading U.S. hand surgery programs to observe and learn.
Montefiore Einstein was one of 18 institutions across the United States selected as a host institution in 2025. In September 2025, we hosted three hand surgeons from Germany, Singapore, and Israel. During their journey across the United States, the fellows visited four institutions: Montefiore Einstein, New York University, Duke University, and the Hand & Upper Extremity Center of San Antonio.
At Montefiore Einstein, the fellows visited with Dr. Koehler to learn about birth brachial plexus injuries. They observed a complex combined nerve and muscle transfer reconstruction for a four-year-old child who traveled from West Africa to receive care at Montefiore Einstein. Following this, they participated in the unique Montefiore Einstein multidisciplinary brachial plexus clinic, the only clinic of its kind in the tristate area, which serves a large catchment area spanning from Boston to Philadelphia. The Montefiore Einstein Brachial Plexus Program treats more than 150 children annually and, in 2025, performed 40 brachial plexus surgeries, in addition to many other complex nerve and reconstructive procedures within the Hand Division at Montefiore Einstein.
Montefiore Einstein has once again been selected as a host site for the 2026 international visiting fellows.
Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society
Montefiore Einstein Orthopedics Surgery had the distinct honor of being selected to be a host site for the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society's travelling fellowship in August 2025. This coveted experience draws orthopedic trauma experts interested in developing the strategies and skills necessary to manage complex limb reconstructive surgery. This year, the fellowship was awarded to Dr. Elizabeth Wellings from Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and Dr. Asanka Wijedra from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in the UK.
Dr. Kahn and the trauma division hosted them for several days and included them in treating patients who sought out our expertise in managing fracture nonunions, limb deformities, bone loss and infection. They also engaged in surgical simulations, pushing the boundaries on how limb-saving surgeries are performed.
Montefiore Einstein Orthopedics Surgery will host once again in 2027.
