HIGHLIGHTS
Advancing Joint Replacement Care with Leading-Edge ROSA Robotic Technology
Montefiore Einstein has integrated the Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA) Machine into its Joint Replacement Program. This advanced robotic technology enables enhanced surgical precision, improved patient outcomes and faster recovery. With over 2,400 joint replacements performed in 2024 alone, this state-of-the-art platform is an integral addition to the award-winning program.
The ROSA platform enables surgeons to develop customized, patient-specific surgical plans that maximize outcomes with reduced patient impact. The results have been transformative for cases that historically presented the greatest challenges. For patients with severe deformities, ROSA allows for more anatomic reconstruction of the knee with significantly reduced soft tissue release. Now, a single robotic surgery can be used to treat patients who traditionally would need multiple procedures and extensive trauma, such as cases with previous injuries or fractures involving hardware. With traditional techniques, this was nearly impossible.
Leading this approach is Carlos M. Alvarado, MD, FAAOS, Director of Robotic Hip and Knee Surgery at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Alvarado brings unparalleled expertise in ROSA robotic surgery to our patients:
- Among the top 3 ROSA users nationwide, with over 650 robotic procedures performed
- Official ROSA robotics system trainer, teaching other surgeons advanced techniques
- Recently published groundbreaking research on ROSA learning curves, presented at the prestigious American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and European Orthopedic Research Society conferences
The Joint Replacement Program, established in 2012, has consistently demonstrated its commitment to evidence-based care following nationally recognized guidelines and pathways. The program's excellence is validated through multiple prestigious recognitions, including being the first facility in the Bronx to receive Joint Commission Advanced Certification for Hip and Knee Replacement, a distinction it has maintained annually since 2019. The facility is also recognized as a Blue Cross Distinction Center, an Aetna Institute of Quality for Joint Replacement Surgery, and has been designated by US News & World Report as a High-Performing Hospital for Knee Replacement Surgery.
The Wakefield campus further distinguishes itself as the first and only Nursing Magnet facility in the Bronx, with the Joint Replacement Program achieving the highest Magnet scores institution-wide. This recognition underscores the program's dedication to clinical excellence and nursing leadership.
The program's innovative home recovery model, featuring 23.5-hour stays and ambulatory joint procedures, demonstrates superior outcomes through seamless coordination with Montefiore Homecare, where patients receive therapy and support services within 24 hours of discharge, regardless of weekends or holidays. This close partnership enables recovery in familiar environments while maintaining the highest medical standards.
