HIGHLIGHTS
CHAM achieves “Baby-Friendly” Designation
The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) was highlighted for achieving a “Baby Friendly” designation by Baby Friendly United States of America (BFUSA). The Baby-Friendly USA accreditation demonstrates Montefiore’s commitment to improving infant feeding policies, staff training and best practices for mother/baby care. In 2017, the Montefiore Einstein Health System was the first health system to have both the Wakefield and Weiler campuses achieve designation at the same time. Montefiore Medical Center of the Jack D. Weiler Hospital of Albert Einstein College Division successfully was re-designated in 2024.
Baby-Friendly is a global initiative started in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The mission is to increase support for breastfeeding. In 1997, the United States boosted its commitment by forming Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization. Healthy People 2030, a public health declaration prioritizing health goals and objectives for each decade, also supports this initiative. Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers also uphold the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes by offering parents support, education and educational materials that promote the use of human milk, rather than other infant food or drinks, and by refusing to accept or distribute free or subsidized supplies of breast milk substitutes, nipples and other feeding devices.
