Ulrich Steidl, M.D., Ph.D., and Teresa Bowman, Ph.D., have been recognized for their research and mentorship by the International Society of Experimental Hematology (ISEH). The ISEH, established by scientists in 1950 and incorporated in the United States in 1972, promotes scientific programs, publications, and research focused on hematologic and immunologic disorders. The ISEH 2025 Society Awards will be presented at the ISEH 54thannual meeting this September in Japan.

Dr. Steidl received the 2025 McCulloch & Till Award for his “outstanding contributions to the field of hematology, particularly his ground-breaking functional and mechanistic studies of HSCs [hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells], pre-cancerous stem cells, and leukemia evolution.” The award is the society’s highest honor for mid-career investigators. Several of Dr. Steidl’s laboratory’s studies have identified novel leukemia stem cell-directed targets and drugs that have led to clinical trials for people with hematologic malignances. Dr. Steidl is the Edward P. Evans Endowed Professor for Myelodysplastic Syndromes and professor and chair of cell biology at Einstein, and deputy director at the National Cancer Institute-designated  Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center (MECCC), and co-director of MECCC’s Blood Cancer Institute. 

Dr. Bowman received the 2025 ISEH Outstanding Mentor Award, given to a researcher “who has demonstrated outstanding scientific mentorship by fostering academic and professional development of trainees and early independent career scientists in the field of experimental hematology.” She has mentored students and scientists from the high school level to postdoctoral fellows, and “many of her trainees have continued in research and have secured individual fellowships and training awards,” noted the ISEH awards committee, which also mentioned her work in establishing Ph.D. student summer boot camps. Dr. Bowman is the Renée E. and Robert A. Belfer Chair in Developmental Biology and professor and chair of developmental & molecular biology at Einstein, and a member of MECCC’s Stem Cell & Cancer Biology Research Program.
