Einstein Medical Scientist Training Program Student Wins Prestigious Scientific Society Award

Gabriel Bedard, an MD/PhD student in Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program, has won the Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC) / Herbert Tabor Early Career Investigator Award. JBC is published by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Mr. Bedard was named one of six award winners for his paper, “Combined inhibition of MTAP and MAT2a mimics synthetic lethality in tumor models via PRMT5 inhibition.”

JBC presents the annual award, named for the late editor-in-chief of the journal, to first authors of exceptional studies published in the previous year. Mr. Bedard’s paper, published in January 2024, demonstrated that a combination therapy using two enzyme inhibitors reduces tumor growth in xenograft models of colorectal cancer.

Mr. Bedard’s mentor is Vern Schramm, PhD, professor of biochemistry and the Ruth Merns Chair in Biochemistry at Einstein, and a member of the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center.
